Lynn Valley Fact and Fiction

The anti-development crowd has been playing fast and loose with idea and opinions. I finally spent most a day tracking down facts to clarify in my own mind what was - and wasn't - true.

  1. I totally agree that you can not compare Lynn Valley to Metrotown.
Metrotown has access to the Skytrain rapid transit system and therefore can be the home of a lot more people than Lynn Valley. There are no plans to extend the bridges or to extend Skytrain to the North Shore.
Density only works when there is adequate public transit available and in Lynn Valley the bus service is cut back. By allowing 5000 more residents into Lynn Valley without a proper transportation is totally irresponsible.
It takes 100 buses twice a day to move 5000 people. This amounts to a approx. 50M dollars/ year of investment from Translink. There is nothing in the budget, not even future budget for that at Translink.

  2. As I read the information boards (I'll check), There's already a population of 1600 in place. The largest increase in population would be 3700 people. That's a 4% increase in DNV population over several years.

Regardless of that, the overall transportation plan for Lynn Valley does allow for an increase in transit usage, and creates a transit "hub" in the heart of the community.

If you look at the OCP and the Transporation plans you'll see that the planners have already considered some increase in the volume of auto, bike, foot, and bus traffic.

I feel safe in saying that it's ridiculous to suggest that all 5000 people would travel by bus.

I agree that Translink is a disaster, but it's still fair to say that as population increases, so will the amount of transit that they give us.

  3. The increase of transit is in the OCP but there is no commitment from the Translink. Translink does not care what the OCP says. They have their own agenda. There is no commitment in writing from Translink that they will fund the additional buses into Lynn Valley.
As a matter of fact they are decreasing the bus service into Lynn Valley!
